スギ・ヒノキが植えられた林から、トチやブナなどの広葉樹が生える森を抜け、人々が暮らす洞川温泉旅館街を通って戻るルートです。高低差が少なく、途中で舗装道路に引き返せるポイントもあるので安心。登山や森歩きに慣れていないという方におすすめです。お弁当は事前に用意しておきましょう。
This route starts from the forest where sugi and hinoki are planted, then goes through the forest of broad-leaved trees including Japanese horse chestnut and Siebold’s beech, and passes Dorogawa Hot Springs Village. There is little difference in altitude, and there are points to return to paved streets in middle of the route. It is recommended for people who are not used to climbing mountains or walking in the woods. Prepare a lunch box beforehand

地下宮殿さながらの自然の洞窟Natural cave like an underground palace
県の特別天然記念物に指定された長さ280mの鍾乳洞で、洞内の平均気温は8℃。何万年もの歳月をかけてつくられた自然の芸術です。
This is a 280m-long limestone cave designated as a special natural monument by the prefecture. The average temperature inside it is 8℃. An art of nature created through tens of thousands of years.

植林を抜けた後に現れる、多様な植物の営みが美しい森The beauty of this forest which appears after the artificial forest is the workings of various plants
真言宗醍醐派大本山「龍泉寺」の裏山にある天然の森で、県の天然記念物に指定されています。生えているのはモミ・ツガ・スギ・イタヤカエデ・トチノキ・ブナなど。高木から低木まで、さまざまな年齢の木が生えていることからも、自然のサイクルで健全に世代交代がなされている様子が伺えます。
This is natural forest in the backyard mountain of Ryusenji Temple, the main temple of the Daigo division of the Shingon Sect of Buddhism. It is designated as a natural monument of Nara Prefecture. Fir trees, hemlock, sugi, Itaya-kaede (a kind of maple), buckeye, and Siebold’s beech grow here. Trees of various age including high trees and bushes are evidence of a healthy succession of generations.

森と植林の境目The border between natural forest and artificial forest
スギ・ヒノキの植林を抜けると、森の景色が一変するポイントがあります。ここで前後を見比べると、森と林の景色が大きく異なることに気がつくはず。天然の森は明るくて、植物はみんなどこか気持ち良さそうです。
There is a point where the view suddenly changes after the artificial forest of sugi and hinoki. You’ll notice the large difference between natural forest and artificial forest. Natural forest is brighter, and the plants seems like they are feeling comfortable.

高さ50m! スリル万点の大吊り橋The 50m-high large suspension bridge is full of thrills
全長120m・高さ50mの、天川村で最も長い吊り橋。洞川では岩燕のことを“かりがね”と呼ぶことから、橋の名前がつけられたそう。
The longest suspension bridge is in Tenkawa Village. The total length is 120m and the height is 50m. The bridge is named after house martins, which are called “Karigan” by local people

森目線の見どころForester’s eye
倒木の上は新たな命のパラダイスThe top of a fallen tree is a paradise for new lives
菌が登ってこられない倒木の上には、たくさんの木の赤ちゃんが育っています。ただし彼らには、後に土まで根を下ろせるかどうかの命の勝負が待っています。
Many baby trees grow on the top of fallen trees where fungi do not come up. However, their life will be tested in the future by whether they can take root in the ground.

清流に棲むカエルの名前がつけられた美しい滝A beautiful waterfall named after frogs living in the limpid stream
カジカとは清流に棲む体長5cmほどのカエルのこと。春から夏にかけて、鈴を転がすような美しい声で鳴くことで知られています。滝の落差はありませんが、周囲の緑や透き通った水と相まって、とても美しい風景が広がっています。
Kajika is an approximately 5cm-long frog which lives in limpid streams. They are known for their beautiful voice like ringing bells from spring to summer. The waterfall is not very big, but the green surrounding it and the clear water create very beautiful scenery.

役行者の母親が祀られたお堂A shrine commemorating the mother of En-no-gyoja
心配して会いにきた母の身を案じて役行者が建てた庵。その母「白専女(しらとうめ)」が祀られ、多くの方が安産祈願に訪れています。
It was a shelter En-no-gyoja built for his mother Shiratoume when she came to see him in the mountains worrying about him. This shrine commemorates Shiratoume, and many people visit here to pray for safe birth.

名水百選に選ばれる湧き水A spring water selected as one of 100 famed mineral waters
環境省名水百選「洞川湧水群」の一つ。近くの「ごろごろ茶屋」で汲むことができ、施設利用料の一部は山への広葉樹植栽に活用されています。
Dorogawa spring waters were selected as 100 famed mineral waters by the Ministry of the Environment. You can fill your bottles at “Goro-goro Chay” caé nearby. A part of the fee is used for planting broad-leaved trees in the mountains.

解説 役行者とはInformation Who is En-no-gyoja?
役行者は、奈良時代に大峯山に入り、1,000日ものあいだ修行を行って「修験道」という宗教を確立したと言われている人物。鬼を従えるほどの法力をもっていたとも。「修験道」は古代の山岳信仰を礎に、仏教・道教・陰陽道などの外来の宗教が混ざり合った、日本独自の宗教。今なお、その信仰は人々の心を掴み、多くの行者が天川村を訪れているのです。
En-no-gyoja is a person who is said to have established the religion Shugendo (mountaineering asceticism) by practicing ascetic exercises for as long as 1,000 days in Omine Mountains in the Nara Period. He is said to have had the power of the Buddhist dharma to bring ogres as servants with him. Shugendo is an original religion of Japan formed based on ancient mountain religion mixed with other religions from foreign countries such as Buddism, Taoism, and the Way of Yin and Yang. The faith still attracts people, and many ascetics visit Tenkawa Village.

縁側のある旅館が軒を連ね、土産物店や射的のお店も。夜になると店先に吊るされた行灯が灯され、どこか懐かしい風情が漂います。
Japanese style inns with traditional verandas stand side by side. There are also souvenir shops and a target shooting game shop. Paper-covered lamps are lit in the night, and there is somewhat nostalgic atmosphere.
